December Runner of the Month - Sam Walker, 1 Year 1000 Miles
As a child, I battled weight issues myself and know firsthand the physical and emotional toll it can take. The battle continued into adulthood until September 2008 when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 28. After 6 months of chemotherapy I went into remission in April 2009 and have been in remission ever since.
One of the most important lessons I learned from battling cancer was that if I expected my body to take care of me, I needed to start taking care of my body. After 8 months of hard work with my personal trainer, I got myself into good mental and physical shape for the first time in my life. I found my health, my strength, but most of all I found myself.
As an exclamation point, I ran in the Fort4Fitness Half Marathon in September 2011, almost 3 years to the date of when I was diagnosed.
I had my goal for the 1,000 miles before the idea of using my running to help others came to me. It is then that I came upon this idea. On my journey, I plan on raising money to fight childhood obesity in the Fort Wayne, Allen County area.
I planned on completing these 1,000 miles before deciding to use it as a way to raise money. I will be taking the full responsibility for all personal expenses such as clothes, supplements, registrations and the like.
In the next month I will have a way to accept donations online to an account specifically for this cause. I will be collecting funds all year, and at the end of the year will take all donations to a local organization that helps fight childhood obesity.
